About Us
Hi - I'm Nic, and I am the creator of the Canine Transformation Station.
I have a Bachelor of Science (Psych) and my studies and research originally occurred alongside goats, ducks, horses, donkeys, dogs and cats. I then departed from working with animals for a while to work as a Developmental Practitioner with children with extreme and complex behaviours. During this time, I had opportunity to see the benefits dogs add to peoples lives both as companion and assistants or therapy dogs. Here I expanded my studies to include Abnormal and Developmental Behaviour and developed a good understanding of fear based and aggressive behaviours. After quite a few years, I remembered that dogs are far less aggressive than wild kids and returned to work with dogs in rescues, commercial kennels and shelter environments. My education continued and I have certificates in Dog Training, Animal Psychology, Animal Welfare, Health and Husbandry, Nutrition, Animal & Human First Aid :)
I was lucky enough to enter this life into a family who already had a dog, and my childhood was spent learning beside a Rough Collie.
At 14, I began volunteering at the local RSPCA kennel and there I met the first of 5 German Shepherds who would live out their lives with me. The first, Cavalier, was plucked from the destruction row at the very last hour and despite being a particularly challenging dog, he lived to the healthy age of 14. The fifth Shepherd known by all as "The smartest dog in the world" departed our lives in 2013 at the age of 17. I will forever consider her my most effective teacher. Her exit also prompted the formation of the Canine Transformation Station and it continues as something of a legacy to her memory.
Our goal is to help you create great companion dogs that match well with your often changing family. We help you to ensure your dog is happy, healthy, obedient and can develop a range of basic behaviours that ensures s/he can take his/her place as a well mannered member of your family. Dogs contribute so much to our lives and ensuring they can live out their lives with their best mates and your offspring is hugely important. A dog that is destroying gardens, jumping on visitors, barking at neighbours can cause problems that are often quite easily addressed. Helping you solve those issues and opening the lines of communication so that you can enjoy your dog again is the primary reason we do what we do.
I am also a realist and understand that sometimes Life happens - Should you find you require assistance with rehoming, our rehabilitation and rehoming program has helped many misplaced, displaced and abandoned dogs step into their destiny and locate new forever homes. You are welcome to contact us for help if you need support with surrendering your dog and locating a new home.
We are also experienced with deaf dogs if you need help developing signals and cues for the hearing impaired dogs among us, and can help you navigate all aspects of the lifespan from puppies through to seniors.
What makes for an intelligent dog?
I am lucky enough to work with amazing dogs every day, and I am very grateful to the owners who trust me with their dogs development. Much like the naughty kids in school, I know that the moment I am contacted by someone at their wits end because their dog is presenting as unruly, unmanageable or ill-mannered... that I am about to meet with another very smart dog.
There are many dogs bred for many different purposes, and development across the lifespan can also contribute to certain behaviours. I consider these and explore what natural drives exist in each dog. I believe an intelligent dog is one that can develop within its natural skill set, communicate well with its handler/s, experience a clear role and confidently enjoy its place within its family.
All dogs are keen to please their handlers, and even dogs who arrive with traumatic histories, can and do transform once mutual communication is established alongside a reliable attachment.
In a nutshell.. the better your relationship.. the smarter your dog will appear :)
Training methods
I am a developmental trainer, with a socio-environmental outlook who utilises positive reinforcement, diversional therapy, route learning and group modelling to promote obedience behaviours. Rewards are identified and treats are used only to mark initial behaviours. Two way communication is encouraged with consistent verbals, cues, gestures, and hand signals.
